Did you know avocados are a fruit (a berry, actually) native to Central and South America, and have been cultivated since 8,000 BCE. They’re high in fat (the good kind), making them the perfect healthy comfort food.
How to buy an avocado
Choose an avocado that’s weighty and blemish free. A ripe one should yield to gentle pressure (not too firm and not too soft).
How to ripen an avocado
If you’d like to ripen an avocado quickly, do so by storing it in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana (the banana produces ethylene, which hastens ripening). Once it’s ripe, you can store it in the fridge for a few days to keep it from getting too soft. Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice over cut avocado pieces to keep them from turning brown.
DIY avocado hair mask
Avocados are beneficial for healthy skin and hair, but you don’t need to eat one to enjoy its beautifying benefits. Use this recipe to whip up a mask for strong and shiny locks.
1 Mashup half of a ripe avocado and mix it with 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil.
2 Stir until the mixture has a creamy consistency.
3 Apply to wet (shampooed and rinsed) hair. Leave the mask on for up to 30 minutes. Rinse.
